Artist Biography

Interested in art since early childhood, Door County artist, Bethany A. Kirwen, has familiarized herself with a wide variety of two and three-dimensional media over her lifetime, but she’s not done yet! Concentrating on wood and metal sculptures and ceramics, she received her BFA from Central Michigan University. Many years following were spent as a professional puppeteer performing with her husband, Scott Kirwen, in their Kirwen’s Kids Puppet troupe and creating life-sized hand/rod people puppets that were sold throughout the country.

For the past sixteen years, Bethany has painted public and private commissioned murals while operating her own painting business, Paint A New Image. After painting many years, primarily with acrylics and mixed media, she began pursuing her dream of sharing her art with a larger audience and has been working as a studio artist, enjoying classes with other area artists, widening her repertoire with pastels, watercolor, metal art, and painted ceramic tiles.

Florals and landscapes are currently among her favorite subject matter. She often enjoys plein aire and working from her own photos of places that are interesting and invoke feelings of good memories. She finds delight in sharing her enthusiasm for simple pleasures she sees in various subjects, unusual shapes, colors, and shadows. A piece is finished when she is completely satisfied with the results. Blessed with great opportunities in Door County and her travels, she readily admits there are endless possibilities yet to explore.

Her encouraging nature toward others who aspire to make art is to keep working at it and believe that you can, casting off fear, doubt, and uncertainty. Faced with those demons herself, in 2009 she won the People’s Choice Award in the Door County Maritime Museum’s Paint the Bay. It was a significant turning point for which she is very grateful and appreciative of everyone who has generously supported her.
